Appy Astros Alumni Of The Month - July 2013

The short season is in full swing and both Greeneville and Tri Cities lead their divisions. The rest of the farm isn't doing to shabbily either with both Corpus Christi and Lancaster leading their divisions in the second half of the season.

Here is your monthly look at how former Greeneville Astros are doing in the Major Leagues, the Astros' farm system and in other minor league affiliates.

Tri-City ValleyCats (short season A ball)

Hitter
Chan Moon was bumped back down to short season ball after spending most of last season in Low A and even getting a taste of High A.  The fact that he is in Tri Cities shows you the depth at SS in the organization.  In July, he hit .299/.365/.358 with seven stolen bases.

Pitcher
Michael Feliz has been dominate in the NY/Penn League.  In 20 1/3 innings in July, he fanned 23 batters and offered free passes to just three.  His season ERA is 1.49 with 42 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings pitched.

Quad Cities River Bandits (Low A)

Hitter
Carlos Correa hit .295/.378/.474 for the month of July.  He added two HR and eight doubles.  His season average of .314 shows he is ready for the next challenge.

Honorable mention to Rio Ruiz.  He hit .279 for July with 10 extra base hits (six doubles, one triple and three HR).  He has rebounded from a rough start to raise his season average to .251.

Pitcher
Vincent Velasquez made four starts in July and finished with an impressive 2.35 ERA.  He fanned 21 batters in 23 innings pitched while maintaining a WHIP of 0.783.

Sharing the honor this month is Jordan Jankowski who made two starts and four relief appearances for a combined 19 1/3 innings pitched.  During July, his ERA was 1.86 and he allowed just 13 hits and one walk for a 0.656 WHIP.

Lancaster JetHawks

Hitter
Delino DeShields was hot for July hitting .349/..407/.500 with 19 stolen bases.  He took 10 walks and only struck out 16 times in 106 at bats.

Pitcher
Mike Hauschild has only spent a part of the month in Lancaster be he has been solid in his first three outings.  In 14 innings pitched (two starts and one relief appearance) he struck out 12 batters and only issued two walks.  His Lancaster ERA was 3.86.

Corpus Christi Hooks

Hitter
Rene Garcia gets the nod before he heads off to AAA.  For July, he hit .327/.358/.423.  During his time in Corpus Christi he has thrown out 51% of would be base stealers.

Jonathan Meyer gets honorable mention for his solid month. He hit .315/.411/.446.  After hitting .165 in April, his season average is up to .274.

Pitcher
Who else but David Martinez.   In 5 starts for July (36 1/3 IP) he had a 1.98 ERA with two complete games.

Ruben Alaniz gets honorable mention for his solid month.  In four starts, he posted a 2.59 ERA in 24 1/3 innings.

Oklahoma City RedHawks

Hitter
Ruben Sosa earns this spot despite being the only position player on the roster who played in Greeneville.  He appeared in 19 games in July and hit an impressive .368 with three triples.

Pitcher
Jorge De Leon gets the nod by virtue of three strong relief appearances after his call up from Corpus Christi.  He has not allowed a run in the four innings he has thrown so far.

Outside The Astros Org.

Hitter
Albert Cartwright had a very solid month for Reading (Phillies AA).  He hit .306/.328 /.417 bringing his season average up to .268.

Pitcher
Victor Garate made five starts for Saltillo of the Mexican League (AAA).  His ERA for July was 1.74.  He fanned 33 batters in his 31 innings of work.

MLB

Hitter
J.D. Martinez gets the honor by hitting .288 in 17 games this month.  Honorable mention goes to Brandon Barnes for hitting for the cycle this month.

Pitcher
Fernando Abad continues his solid work this season.  In July, he amassed a 1.86 ERA in 10 games (9 2/3 IP) out of the Nationals bullpen.  Home runs have always been Abad's Achilles heel, but this year, through 24 1/3 innings, he has not surrendered a long ball.

Appy Astros Alumni of the Month: June 2013

June is a fun month. The short season teams have started playing.  Most of the full season teams have had their all star games.  Let's see which former G-Stros' June was more fun because of their performances.  We won't look at the short season teams this month because two weeks isn't really enough time to assess performances yet.

Quad Cities:

Hitters -
Who else but Carlos Correa.  Correa hit .370/.413/.510 for the month. He has brought his average up to .323 for the season after a very sluggish start. Fun stat for Correa - Out of his 289 plate appearances so far, only six have been against pitchers younger than him and he has no hits against the younger pitchers.  In the 283 plate appearances against older pitchers, he is hitting .332.

Honorable mention to Jesse Wierzbicki who hit .286/.351/.417 for the month of June.

Pitchers -
Lance McCullers Jr. continues to have an impressive season in Quad Cities.  McCullars struck out 33 batters in 27 1/3 innings pitched with a 2.30 ERA.

Honorable mention to Daniel Minor who had a 2.76 ERA in 16 1/3 innings before he went on the DL.

Lancaster

Hitters -
Delino DeShields had another solid month in June.  He hit .280/.370/.366.  He also stole 8 bases to bring his season total to 20 on the season.  He has really settled in as a 20 year old playing in the Cal. League.

Pitchers -
Luis Cruz has bounced back from a rough May and had an outstanding June.  In 31 2/3 innings pitched, he allowed just 22 hits and seven walks for a WHIP of 0.906.  He had an impressive total of 40 strike outs for the month!

Corpus Christi

Hitters -
Jonathan Meyer had another solid month hitting.280 with eight doubles and five home runs for a .510 slugging percentage.

Pitchers -
David Martinez continues to put up impressive numbers this season.  In 30 2/3 June innings, he gave up just 21 hits and two walks while striking out 24 batters.  Opponents hit just .193 against him in June.

Oklahoma City
There were only two former G-Stros on the roster at any point in time this month. Nether put up numbers worthy of recognition.

Major Leagues

Hitters-
Jose Altuve continues to be the most consistent Astro at the plate  Even in a down month (.275
average) he still lead the time in batting average.

Pitchers -
Jose Cisnero struck out 14 batters in 11 2/3 innings pitched (8 games).  He had not given up a run in June until his final outing. He ended the month with a 0.77 ERA.

Honorable mention to Troy Patton who found his grove again in June.  In 12 appearances (12 1/3 IP) he fanned 12 batters and did not walk a batter after giving up eight free passes in May. ERA for June was 1.46

Fernando Abad also gets a honorable mention with his performance out of the National's bullpen.  In 12 games (12 1/3 IP) he struck out 14 batters and also walked no one.  His June ERA was also 1.46

Finally, I feel like J.C. Gutierrez deserves a mention as well.  In limited action, he fanned eight batters in nine innings of pitching for the Royals.  He finished June with a 2.00 ERA.

Appy Astros Alumni of the Month - May 2013

We are getting closer to seeing baseball in Greeneville.  The draft is next week and players will report on the 16th of June.  Until that time, we spend our time watching box scores of former G-Stros.  Here are the alumni who stood out in the month of May.

Quad Cities - Low A

Hitters

No doubt who this one goes to this month.  Carlos Correa hit .349/.423/.442 with six doubles and a triple for the month.  He raised his average from .221 at the end of April to .292.  What may be more exciting is that his strike outs dropped from 23 in April to just 12 in May.  He was also 4 for 5 in the stolen base department.

Honorable mention goes toe Jordan Scott who bounced back from a .217 April with a .319 May.  At the same time, his OBP jumped from .347 to .473 thanks to increasing his walk total from 12 in April to 23 in May.

Pitchers

This month we have co-Alumi of the month in this spot. Lance McCullers continues to put up impressive numbers in QC.  In his seven appearances in May, he struck out 26 batters in 24 innings pitched with a 1.88 ERA.  He did struggle some with walks, offering 14 free passes to batters.

As good as McCullers has been, Jordan Jankowski deserves a mention as well.  In his six appearances in May, he has struck out 32 batters in 29 1/3 IP.  He only allowed four walks during the month.  His ERA in May was 2.15. Jankowski at 24 is older than league average of 22.2 but he is putting up impressive numbers. It looks like he might be ready for the next challenge.

Honorable mention goes to Mike Hauschild who in seven appearances amassed a 3.09 ERA in 29 2/3 IP.  He fanned 19 while giving up nine walks.  He did not allow a home run during the month.

Lancaster - High A

Hitters

Despite missing some time with an injury to his hand. Delino DeShields put up impressive numbers in May.  He his .312/.418/.442 with 12 walks and 15 strike outs in 20 games.  After going 5 for 11 in stolen bases in April, he was 7 for 9 in May.

Pitchers

Despite his struggles during the month in general, when you pitch four innings of a combined no hitter (5/12/13), you get the nod for pitcher of the month.  So we give the nod this month to Luis Cruz.

Corpus Christi - AA

Hitters

In what may be the biggest bounce of the month, Jonathan Meyer jumped his average from .165 at April's end to .250 as of 5/30.  In May, he put up a .321/.364/.481 line.  Eleven of his 34 hits for the month went for extra bases.  At the same time, he doubled his walk total (from 4 to 9) and he reduced his strike out rate (20/85 in April to 15/106 in May).

Honorable mention goes to Rene Garcia who put up another solid month - .304/.364/.405.  He leads the team and is 5th in the league with a .315 average on the season.

Pitchers

Michael Foltynewicz earns top props this month.  Since his promotion from Lancaster earlier this month, he has been lights out.  In 25 IP, he has only surrendered 13 hits and three earned runs.  His ERA for the month is a measly 1.08.  He has struck out 25 batters and has walked 10.

Honorable mention goes to his piggy back starting mate David Martinez.  Martinez had another good month with a 2.30 ERA.  His season total is 1.83 and is second in the league.  The Hooks have won 11 of the 13 games in which Martinez has made an appearance.

Oklahoma City - AAA

Greeneville only has one alumni in OKC.  Ross Seaton showed improvement in May, dropping his ERA from 11.57 at the end of April down to 7.78 at the end of May.

Minors - Other systems

Hitters

There was some movement among former G-Stros outside of the organization.  Both Jordan Parraz and J.R. Towles were released by their teams and picked up by others.  Parraz in now in AA with the Twins organization and Towles landed with the Dodgers in AAA.  No one really excelled to earn the Alumni of the month for this category.

Pitcher

Fernando Abad pitched seven scoreless outings to earn the Alumni award before being promoted to the big leagues.  Since his arrival in Washington, he has appeared in four games.  He has allowed no runs and one hit in 2 1/3 IP with two strike outs and no walks.

MLB

Hitters

J.D. Martinez had a very good month of May.  He hit .299/.325/.506 with 10 of his 23 hits going for extra bases.  It is nice to see the pop back in Martinez's bat.  It might be an indication he is finally fully healed from the broken Hamate bone and subsequent surgery.

Pitchers

J.C. Gutierrez gets the nod for Alumni of the month with his good work in limited action out of the Royals pen.  In 8 1/3 IP (6 appearances) he allowed no runs and just five hits with seven strike outs and no walks.

Honorable mention goes to Jose Cisnero, who except for one rough outing on 5/4/13 had a very good month.  When you take that one outing out, he put up 12 2/3 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 4 BB and 14 K.  So the month was much more good than bad for Cisnero.

Going Camping: Update on Former G-Stros in Big League Camp

In Astros Camp, here is the latest on the former G-Stros:

Jose Altuve has appeared in just two games so far this spring.  He is a lock to make the big league club but his lack of playing time concerns me as far as a possible injury.

Brandon Barnes is making the most of his opportunities when he gets playing time.  He has appeared in four games thus far and is three for nine at the plate with a HR, no strike outs and two stolen bases.  He also has two outfield assist. There is a great deal of competition for the outfield spots and Barnes is doing his best to make the decision even tougher.

Jose Cisnero made his first appearance yesterday and was effective pitching 1 1/3 innings give up one hit and one walk while striking out one batter.

Delino DeShields is getting a full taste of major league camp this spring.  He has appeared in four games and has demonstrated his speed tool in the pinch runner mode several times.  He has scored three runs, even though he  has only reached base one time as a batter.

Rene Garcia is in camp for catching depth and has played in three games thus far.  He is hit less in two at bats but has two walks in his other plate appearances.

Jordan Lyles had a rough outing in his first outing of the spring but it is nothing to get too worried about.  He will likely be in the rotation when camp breaks.

J.D. Martinez is three for his first 10 this spring as he fights for a starting spot in the Astros outfield.  It was reported yesterday he will see some time in right in addition to his usual spot in left.

Chris Wallace is also in camp for catching depth.  He has appeared in two games and doesn't have a hit in two at bats but he does have an RBI and a walk.

Other players on the spring training roster who might get some playing time as the spring progresses (especially in split squad games) are: Michael Foltynewicz (#88), Jonathan Meyer (#96). Roberto Pena (#84) and Ross Seaton (#61).

In other camps around baseball here is how the former G-Stros are doing.

Juan Gutierrez  has apparently decided on a name change.  He is now listed as J.C. Gutierrez on the Royals roster.  In his lone outing thus far, he pitched a 1,2,3 inning against the D-Backs and appears to be the top candidate for the final bullpen spot. He should make his second appearance today.

In other news from Royals camp, Felipe Paulino threw off the mound earlier this week and is making progress towards a mid season return.

Troy Patton had a good outing yesterday with Baltimore.  He came into the game in a bases loaded one out jam. He escaped by striking out Shane Victorino and then got Christian Vazquez to ground into a force out.  His full line for the day was 1 1/3 IP, two hits, one run, one walk and two strike outs.

Fernando Abad is making some noise in Nationals camp.
If one player stood out aside from starter Dan Haren, it was left-handed reliever Fernando Abad. He had a 5.09 ERA last year for the Astros, but he’s been impressing the Nationals all spring, starting in bullpen sessions. Abad, 27, struck out one batter in a 1-2-3 inning. His odds to make the roster are long, but he could work his way into the competition for the final spot in the Nationals’ bullpen. If you’re looking for a sleeper, it may be Abad.
Jordan Parraz  has yet to start in game for the Braves but has preformed well when he has gotten time.  In six games (8 AB), he is hitting .250 with one HR.

J.R. Towles has appeared in two games for the Cards and has one hit in three at bats.

Arcenio Leon has made two appearances for the Brewers (1 2/3 IP) giving up two hits and two walks with no strike outs.  He has surrendered two earned runs and one long ball.

Victor Garate has yet to appear in a game in Dodgers camp thus far.

My next update will come from Florida.  My son and I leave for Spring Training next Wednesday and hope to see many of Florida based former G-Stros in person.

16 former G-Stros on Instructional Roster

Brian McTaggart just released the Astros roster for the fall instructional league. This year, 16 former G-Stros will be spending a few extra weeks in Kissimmee honing their skills.  Here are the former G-Stros based on when they played here:

2008
Zach Grimmett - appeared in 23 games for Lancaster.  Ten of them as a starter and 13 as a reliever. Finished the year with an 8.21 ERA.

2009
Jonathon Meyer - Hit .272 in his second year in Lancaster.

2010
Telvin Nash - Hit .224 with 29 HR and 198 strikeouts in 106 games in Lancaster.

Delino DeShields - Had a break out year.  Started in Lexington and finished the year in Lancaster.  Stole a combined 101 bases on the season.  He raised his slash line from .220/.305/.322 to .287/.389/.428.  Just turned 20 in August.

Roberto Pena - He also started the year in Lexington but moved up to Lancaster to finish the season.  Pena caught 33% of the base stealers (26 out of 78) in Lexington.  His bat showed some improvement but his glove and arm are what have earned him the invite to instructionals.

2012
Three of the players on this list also played in Greeneville in 2011 but we will group them with their most recent cohort.

Ariel Ovando - He showed significant improvement between 2011 (.235/.283/.365) and 2012 (.287/.350/.444).  All the physical tools are present but he is still learning how to get them to do what they need to do.  He turns 19 later this week so we need to have some patience.

Chris Lee - He started the season in the Appy but was sent down to the GCL where he didn't pitch.  So the instructs will give him a chance to get some work in he missed during the season.  He was also on the team in 2011.

Frances Ramirez - He is the other player who was also on the 2011 roster.  He made four starts in '11 verses the 13 he made in 2012.  You can find more of my thoughts on him at my post Season Recap - Starting Pitcher. You can also use that link to get my thoughts on two other 2012 pitchers invited, Michael Feliz & Lance McCullers Jr.

Kevin Comer and Joe Musgrove were acquired during the year and didn't get many chances to pitch which is why they are heading to Florida for the fall.

The other four players are position players who were drafted this year: Carlos Correa, Rio Ruiz, Terrell Joyce, and Angel Ibanez. Of those four, Ibanez is a bit of a surprise due to his low draft slot but he showed a solid bat during the season and 3rd base is a shallow spot in the Astros organization.
Overall, former Greeneville players made up almost half (16 out of 33) of the players invited.

Appy Astros Alumni of the Month: May 2012

Well, I have let June slip up on me and I haven't gotten the highlights from May wrapped up.  Better late than never.  We have two months of full season ball under our belts now, let's see who put up solid months in May.

Lexington Legends:
Hitter of the Month-
Last month, we gave the award to Alex Todd, he has absconded to Lancaster.  In May, we are going to Delino DeShields Jr..  I know he only hit .252 in May but 1/3 of his hits went for extra bases.  But it is more about what happened when he got on base.  He stole 16 bases in 20 attempts in May.  He had 32 total stolen bases in 36 attempts this season.

Honorable Mention: Chan Moon hit .283 in his first 13 games with Lexington and Jordan Scott who hit .270 for the month with nine doubles and two triples.

Pitcher of the Month-
Last month, the honor went the Mike Foltynewicz.  He had another good month (3-0 with a 2.84 ERA) but Luis Cruz was better.  He made five quality starts in the month and finished with a 1.85 ERA in 39 innings pitched.  The little lefty looks like he is putting together a quality year in his third season in Lexington.

Honorable Mention: Folty and Carlos Quevedo who made nine appearances out of the pen (19 1/3 IP) and allowed just 3 earned runs (1.40 ERA).  Also worth of a mention is Murilo Gouvea who made 11 relief appearances (16 IP) and struck out 19 batters while amassing a 2.25 ERA.

Lancaster JetHawks
Hitter of the Month
Jonathan Meyer cooled off in May hitting just .265 and Telvin Nash hit a rough patch seeing his average plummet while his strike outs continued to climb.  So this month, the Almni hitter of the month is Ben Orloff who hit .287 for May.  He also had more walks than strike outs.

Honorable Mentions: Rafael Valenzuela who in limited playing time, hit .270 with eight of his 20 hits going for extra bases.

Pitcher of the Month
This month, we are going to the bullpen to give the award to Jose Trinidad. Trinidad pitched in 10 games in May.  Eight were in relief and two were starts.  In those appearances, he covered 22 1/3 innings pitched and only allowed 6 earned runs for an ERA of 2.42 for the month.

Honorable Mention to RJ Alaniz and Tyson Perez  who both had good starts in May but also had a few where the game got away from them.  But there was more good than bad.

Corpus Christi Hooks
Hitter of the Month
Here we have another situation where the incumbent, Brandon Barnes, was promoted to the next level during the subsequent month; so he was not here to defend his stats as alumni of the month.   There is not much to write home about with the remaining Greeneville alumni on the roster.  However, in limited action, Chris Wallace put together a .273 average in seven games (8 at bats).  With the struggles of other former G-Stros Hinze and McCurdy; Wallace is the best chose this month.

Pitcher of the Month
Ross Seaton was very good this May.  In six starts, he pitched six plus innings in five of them and in those five, he did not give up more than three runs.  His ERA for the month was 2.70.  When you consider he was charged with four earned runs in his first start of the month; his solid ERA at the end of the month is more impressive.

Oklahoma City RedHawks
Hitter of the Month
Brandon Barnes brought his hitting with him to OKC.  In the four games after he arrived late in the month, he hit .333 with five singles in fifteen at bats.

Pitcher of the Month

Jordan Lyles made three starts in OKC in May.  His ERA over those starts was 3.68.  It has been announced that he is in Houston to stay for the foreseeable future so this may be his last shot at AppyAstros Alumni of the month in AAA for a while.

Outside of the System - Minors

Hitter of the Month - Vacant
This section might be called dishonorable mention.  No one stood out.  Jordan Parraz went 0 for 16 in May before landing on the DL with a broken hand.   Ralph Henriquez was promoted to AAA Tacoma after hitting .228 in AA.  J R Towles hit .231 for the month.  Wlad Sutil hit .224 for May.  Albert Cartwright couldn't get above .188 for the month.  Amandeo Zazueta hit just .148.  Koby Clemens was sent down to high A ball and then further down to a short season roster as the work with him on possible returning to catcher.

Pitcher of the Month
Sammy Gervacio appeared on the roster of the Rieleros de Aguascalientes of the Mexican league in May.  He appeared in nine games (10 IP) and maintained an ERA of just 1.80 and struck out 12 batters.  The Mexican League is AAA but it is unaffiliated.  It will be interesting to see if his pitching catches the attention of an affiliated team in the near future.

Major League
Hitter of the Month - Jose Altuve
El Escorpion continues his solid performance at the plate.  He hit a solid .283 with six more walks.  While this is down from April.  It is still worthy of recognition.

Pitcher of the Month - Troy Patton
Patton repeats as Pitcher of the Month.  He was called on 11 times out of the Oriole bullpen and he responded with a 3.55 ERA and also started striking batters out more.  After striking out just four in 10 innings in April, Patton fanned 16 in 12 2/3 innings pitched in May.

Appy Astros Alumni of the Month: April 2012

Each month of the season, I will select a former Greeneville Astros player who had the best month at each level of the organization. I will also select one for outside the organization. Let's get started with our review of April:

Lexington Legends:
Hitter of the Month- Alex Todd
Todd hit an even .300 in 18 games (70 AB) in the month.  He was a road warrior hitting. 438 on the road.

Pitcher of the Month- Mike Foltynewicz
Folty was solid in his five starts (27 1/3 IP).  He finished the month with a 1.98 ERA, which was good for 8th best in the league.  He fanned 27 batters this month.

Lancaster JetHawks
Hitter of the Month - Jonathan Meyer
While Telvin Nash has gotten attention for his Home Runs (9 in the month), Meyer has quietly put together an all around good month.  He hit .309 with four doubles, two triples and two HR.

Honorable Mentions: Telvin Nash & Jio Mier

Pitcher of the Month - Rubin (RJ) Alaniz
Pitching in Lancaster is not for the faint of heart.  Alaniz has performed well in his five starts (31 IP) in the Cal League.  His 2.90 ERA for the month is second on the team among starters.  He fanned 26 and walked only seven during the month.

Corpus Christi Hooks
Hitter of the Month -  Brandon Barnes
Barnes hit .353 for the month with 21 RBI in 22 games.  Of his 32 hits, 18 were for extra bases (14 doubles and four HR).  His 14 doubles leads the Texas League and he is listed in the top 10 in almost every offensive category.
Honorable Mention - Kody Hinze

Pitcher of the Month - Jose Cisnero
Cisnero had three good outings and two that weren't so great during April.  He finished the month with a descent 3.80 ERA but with 30 strike outs in 23 2/3 IP.

Honorable Mention - Arcenio Leon

Oklahoma City RedHawks
Hitter of the Month - None - there are no hitters in Oklahoma City who have spent time in Greeneville.

Pitcher of the Month - Fernando Abad

Sandwiched between two unspectacular performances in Houston, Abad put up stellar numbers out of the pen in AAA.  In 5 relief appearances (7 1/3 IP), Abad struck out 12 and didn't allow a run.

Honorable Mention: Jordan Lyles

Outside of the System - Minors
Hitter of the Month - Jordan Parraz
Parraz hit .367 in April for the Gwinnett Braves (AAA).  He is 6th in the league in batting average.  Parraz, who was one of the last players cut from the Braves spring training, is making a case for his first call up to the Majors.

Pitcher of the Month - Tom Vessella
Vessella pitching out of the pen for the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA- Giants) appeared in nine games (11 2/3 IP) in April.  He amassed a 3.09 ERA, allowing only six hits, while walking seven and striking out seven.

Major League
Hitter of the Month - Jose Altuve
El Escorpion leads all MLB 2nd basemen in average, on base percentage, and hits. He is in the top three in runs, doubles, slugging, and OPS.  His .360 average for the month of April was third best among NL hitters and 7th best in all of MLB.  But I am most excited about the seven walks he took!

Pitcher of the Month - Troy Patton
Patton was the only former G-Stro pitcher to spend the whole month in the bigs.  He got off to a rough start, giving up 2 earned runs in 1/3 of an inning.  Since then, he has surrendered three earned runs in 9 2/3 IP. His performance out of the bullpen has helped the Orioles get off to a surprising start in the AL East.

What To Watch For In 2012 - Former G-Stros Third Basemen

In our trip around the diamond, we are over to the hot corner.  Let's see what questions we will be watching for as the 2012 full season begins and I am sitting here waiting for short season ball in June.

Of the bat, let's not forget that two former G-Stros 3rd basemen are covered in other projections.  Clemens was in the first base What to Watch For and Ebert Rosario will be covered in the pitchers.

Third Basemen

Jean Batista - (2011, 20, Rookie) - Signed in 2010 as a 17 year old switch hitting shortstop.  He didn't play in 2010 but made his debut in the GCL as a 19 year old in 2011.  Notice the ages there....something isn't adding up, which may indicate why he didn't play in the DSL in 2010.  Regardless, Batista is listed as a shortstop but has played more games at 3B (15), 2B (15) than SS (12).  I am including him here because I write the blog and I get to decide! You got a problem with that? Here is what I will be watching for in 2012.  Which position will he spend the most time at? Can he keep the pop up as he moves up?

Jonathan Meyer (2009, 21, Hi A) - Showed significant progress defensively in Lancaster in 2011.  He dropped his errors from 29 to 16 in more chances.  He also showed an increase in power jumping from 2 HR in Lexington to 14 in Lancaster. He finished 2011 with a strong August & September.  In his last 31 games, he hit .307 and walked (19) more times than he struck out (18).  He also had seven of his 23 doubles and five of his 14 home runs during that stretch.  Can he carry the end of 2011 into 2012? Will the power continue or be just another example of the Lancaster effect?

Darwin Rivera - (2011, 20, Rookie) - Rivera was signed in 2008 but had only appeared in 1
game prior to the 2011 season.  He started 2011 in the DSL and earned the promotion to Greeneville and struggled.  He set a G-Stros record for most errors in a season with 30.  His errors tended to come in clusters.  At the plate, he showed mixed reviews having good stretches and very cold stretches.  He showed pop as the season ended with three home runs in August.   Will he improve his fielding in 2012?  Can he show improvement in the mental side of the game (handling mistakes in the field and at the plate)? Can he show some of the potential that was hoped for when he signed in 2008?

Amandeo Zazueta - (2006, 26, AA) - Zazueta's career has survived being released by the Astros (2007), and the Braves (2010); playing for four different indy ball teams, and a 50 game suspension for PEDs (2010). Yet he is still playing in the Padres organization.  He has played 150 games in the minors & indy ball at shortstop.  He played 0 for the Astros organization in two season. At Greeneville, he languished on the bench while Timmy Johnson made 20 errors in 27 games in his second year in Greeneville.  He also put up solid numbers in the Mexican Winter League this off season hitting .278 and making nine errors.  Will he continue to defy the odds and find a spot on a roster?

Projected placement of those still in the Astros system

Oklahoma (AAA)

Corpus Christi (AA)
Meyer

Lancaster (Hi A)

Lexington (Lo A)

2009 Greeneville Astros Progress Report

The 2009 G-Stros were the first bunch that were the sandwich short season team.  Below them, the new GCL Astros were playing at the spring training complex. And the ValleyCats were playing above them in the NY- Penn League. In Greeneville, the fans didn't know what to expect from the new set up in the lower minors.  What we saw was a mix of high draft pick high school players and low round/free agent college players.  This edition of the the G-Stros had just seven teenagers and all seven were still active this year.

Of the 35 players who graced the roster that year, 63% (22) were still active on an affiliated roster at some point this season.  Let's look at how high they climbed.  They are listed by the highest level they appeared in and the percentage by each level is out of the full roster.

MLB (2- 6%)

Jose Altuve - see 2008 write up

J. D. Martinez - made a brief stop in Greeneville on his rapid climb to the majors.  He hit .403 during just 14 games in Greeneville.  This year, he hist .274 in 53 games in the big leagues.  He made the fastest climb of any G-Stros position player to the majors.

AAA ( 0 - 0%)

AA (0 - 0%)
Altuve & Martinez appeared at this level but made it the the show to end the season.

High A (6- 17%)
Miguel Arrendell - The utility man appeared at five positions for Lancaster (RF, LF, SS, 2B, 3B) while hitting .281 in 50 games.  He was moved back to Tri Cities for the last month of the season to sure up their middle infield where he hit just .219 in 18 games. Arrendell will turn 24 during spring training next season.

Grant Hogue - Hogue was a  fan favorite during his time in G'ville for his hustle and easy going nature with fans.  After playing in CF exclusively in 09 & 10, he spent time in all three outfield positions in Lancaster in 2011.  He spent 76 of the 106 games in right field, where he amassed 11 of his 15 assist.  He hit .269 on the season.  He will be 25 when he reports to spring training.

Jonathan Meyer - Meyer continues to show improvement as he climbs the ladder.  In Lancaster in 2011, he hit .264 with 14 home runs.  He had only hit 5 in his previous two seasons.  Next year will determine if the power is the result of Lancaster or his maturation as a hitter.  He will be 21 when he reports next season.

Jio Mier - He evenly split his season between Lexington and Lancaster, playing 57 games at each stop.  He  hit .245 at Lexington, an improvement over 2010's .235, before moving to Lancaster where he hit .233.  Mier is still considered a solid SS prospect and will be 21 when next season rolls around.

Jose Cisnero  - is the pitcher from 2009 who has climbed the highest.  He pitched in Lancaster and amassed a 6.06 ERA. However, when you average 11.09 strike outs per 9 innings (152 in 123 1/3 IP), that means there is something happening good there.  Cisnero will be turn 23 next April.

Luis Cruz  - see 2008 write up.

Low A (7 - 20%)
Garrett Bullock - the tall lefty made just three appearances in Lexington before returning to short season ball in Tri Cities.  Those three outings were not that impressive.  However, his 2.51 ERA in Tri Cities was solid.  Bullock is old for the levels he has been playing.  He will start the season at 25.

Jeiler Castillo - see 2008 write up.

Gabriel Garcia - after two seasons in G'ville, Garcia moved up to Lexington where he was solid.  In 69 1/3 IP (37 games), he had a 3.76 ERA which is lower than his ERA in either season in Greeneville.  He struck out 68 batters and had a WHIP of just 1.212 which is the lowest of his career.  He is pitching well in winter ball in Venezuela right now.  He will be 22 when spring training begins.

Murilo Gouvea - spent most of the season in Lexington with a brief time in Tri Cities.  In Lex, he amassed a 3.98 ERA in 30 games (74 2/3 IP).  He had more than a strike out an inning with 83.  He struggled keeping the walks down.  He will be 23 when next season begins.

David Martinez - was a man in search of a role this year.  He pitched in 37 games. He started five and finished 17.  In 66 2/3 IP, he fanned 44 batters while walking 17.  He will be 24 at the beginning of spring training.

Yuri Perez - like Bullock, he had a less than memorable brief stint at Lexington. He made 15 starts for TriCities where he had a 5.48 ERA.  Perez missed most of 2010 after elbow surgery.  He is still working his way back.  We hope he can regain the form he had in 2009 for Greeneville.  He will be 21 at the start of spring training.

Carlos Quevedo - really struggled to keep the ball in the park.  He gave up 22 home runs in Lexington this season in 151 innings pitched.  That equates to 1.3 HR every nine innings.  He gave up more home runs than walks. Quevedo walked 19 batters for an average of 1.1 per nine innings pitched.  Quevedo will be 22 at the start of spring training.

Short Season A (3 - 5%)
Bubby Williams - the catcher with the cool name, spent 2011 in the New York Penn League.  His showed power, leading the team with six home runs but struggled making consistent contact.  He hit .206 in 36 games for the ValleyCats.  He will be 22 at the start of spring training next year.

Joan Belliard - repeated the NYPenn league in 2011 but only pitched in 18 2/3 innings.  His strike out numbers are still strong but is still struggling with walks.  He will be turning 23 in March.

Travis Smink - after two seasons in G'ville, he moved to Tri Cities this season.  In 23 games, he had a 4.37 ERA.  He will turn 25 next April.

Rookie Ball & DL (4 - 11%)
Luis Alverez - returned to Greeneville after missing 2010 with a bad knee injury.  Alverez hit .271 in 38 games.  He only struck out 19 times in 151 plate appearances.  He turns 22 just before minor leaguers report to spring training.

B J Hyatt - listed on the roster for Greeneville but never was in uniform.  Still rehabbing from surgery after the 2009 season.

Wilton Infante & Nathan Pettus - see 2008 write up.

Summary
Like the 2008 edition, the 2009 team still has 22 active players.  Unlike them, it is the position players who have climbed faster than the pitchers.  A few of the players in this group will not be back for spring training but the core of this bunch should be at AA and High A to start next year.

What To Watch For In 2011 - Former G-Stros Third Basemen

Lets finish our trip around the infield with a look at what we are watching for out of former G-Stro third basemen in 2011. The theme for this position appears to be 'getting old fast'. Remember we covered Koby Clemens in our series when I discussed first basemen. In parenthisis are the year(s) they played in Greeneville and their age on opening day this year.

Third Basemen
Neil Sellers (2004, 28) -
After playing 3 seasons in the Phillies organization, he signed as a minor league free agent with the Marlins this season where he will likely be a AAA teammate of former G-Stro Victor Garate who also signed with Florida this off season. Can he improve on his poor AAA performance last season? Will the thinner ranks of the Marlins organization give him a shot at getting a cup of coffee in the bigs?

Jhon Florentino (2005, 27) - After progressing a step each year since 2005, he repeated at AA for 2010. His numbers didn't reflect any improvement in his second season there. He was a minor league free agent at the end of the season and I haven't seen him sign with anyone yet. So the only question is will he be in spring training at all?

Jonathan Meyer (2009, 20) - Will he repeat in Lex or get pushed on to Lancaster? Can he reduce the numbers of errors? Can he continue to improve at the plate?

Ebert Rosario (2007,08, 23) -
He was sent back to the GCL last season and converted to a pitcher. So he will be in one of the short season teams working on learning to pitch. Let's hope he has as much success at that as Jorge DeLeon had last year.

Rafael Valezuala (2010, 23) - I am wondering if he will start in short season or jump to Lexington.

Johnny Medrano (2010, 23) - What is the status of his injured arm? If healthy will he get a shot at Lexington?

Hector Rodriguez (2010, 20) - Will he be back in Greeneville because of the glut of 3rd older 3rd basemen in the system? Will he be used more as a utility player or will he stay at 3rd?

Instructs & AFL Rosters

Zachary Levine at the Houston Chronicle has posted the roster of players who are in Kissimmee at the Instructional League. This three week season allows for some fine tuning and work with some of the younger prospects. This is where the work begins for "Lino" DeShields to become a second baseman.

Players off the 2010 Greeneville Roster attending include:
Ruben Alaniz
Michael Foltynewicz
Euris Quezada
Rodney Quintero
Roberto Pena
Chris Wallace
Delino DeShields
Marcus Nidiffer
Telvin Nash

Breaking down where the other players spent the MAJORITY of their season:

DSL: 3
The fact the 16 year old Ariel Ovando is in Instructs is a strong sign he will be state side for spring training. Here's hoping he winds up in G'ville.

GCL: 11
A couple of teens to watch out of this group, Jose Fernandez who won't turn 18 until next May, and Jordan Scott who put up solid numbers for a 14th round pick out of HS.

Tri Cities: 11
No surprise Ben Heath is on the list since he finished the year at AA. Glad to see Thomas Shirley on the list since he hadn't pitched since mid July.

Lexington: 11
Last years draft darlings, Mier & Meyer, return to recover from the dose of reality they faced this year.

Lancaster: 5
Jay Austin is spending time in instructs prior to heading out to Arizona for fall league.

AFL Roster Moves
Levine also reports there have been some changes to the Arizona Fall League players from the Astros. T. J. Steele has been removed from the roster and replaced with Jay Austin. Also Brandon Barnes has been added to the roster and according to his twitter, it is as a member of the Taxi Squad. That means he can only play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. But at bats against strong competition is a good thing.
