With independent leagues starting to get underway, I thought we would take a peak at their rosters and see if there are any former Greeneville Astros still playing unaffiliated ball. I found 10 that are on current rosters, one who has moved to coaching and one who has been naughty and is on the suspended list. I also located at least 12 other guys who played in the Astros farm system on the rosters. I might have missed one as there are a bunch of indy leagues and teams.

Five 2004 G-Stros on the Move this Off Season
This is a busy time of the year and if you are a baseball player, off season can often mean moving time. Here are some moves I have tweeted about but you might not have seen so I will put them all in one place for your convenience.
We will start with today's news: J. R. Towles (2004) has signed a minor league deal with the Twins. He has been invited to spring training.
Juan Gutierrez (2004) was signed by the KC Royals to a minor league contract. He is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and will not be ready for spring training.
Jordan Parraz (2004) has signed a minor league deal with the Braves. He has been invited to spring training.
Wlad Sutil (2004) has signed a minor league deal with the D-Backs.
and not playing but still in baseball....
Beau Torbert (2004) is now the hitting coach for the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association (independent).

Outside the System - Farm & Bigs
Yesterday was the opening day of the Minor League Season. It was the second opening day of the baseball season. The third opening day, short season opening day, is the one I am anxiously awaiting now.
For yesterday's action, Subber10 over at The Crawfish Boxes and some citizen of Astros County have done fine recaps so no sense in repeating their hard work. So let's check on those former Greeneville Astros who are no longer in the Houston farm system. I will list who is where and any reports on their opening day results.
Jimmy Barthmaier is in AA Harrisburg of the Nationals organization.
Albert Cartwright is in AA Reading of the Phillies organization.
Jieller Castillo is at Low A Burlington in the A's Organization.
Victor Garate is in AAA New Orleans of the Marlins organization.
Ralphie Henriquez is in A-Advanced High Desert of the Mariners organization. He played in Thursday's game against Lancaster and went 1 for 4 with 2 of the Maverick's strike outs. Opening day was Ralphie's 24th birthday. (His MILB page now list him as Ralph but he will always be Ralphie to me.)
Santo Luis is in AA Portland of the Red Sox organization.
Jordan Parraz is in AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the Yankees organization. He went 2 for 3 on opening night with a triple, a run scored and a RBI.
Troy Patton is in AAA Norfolk with the Orioles organization.
Neil Sellers is in AA Jacksonville of the Marlins organization.
Major League Update:
Let's also check on the former G-Stros who play for other MLB teams besides Houston.
Juan Gutierrez - has made 3 appearances for the D-Backs in relief this year so far. He has yet to surrender an earned run, though he has given up 2 unearned runs. He has fanned 5 in 2 2/3 IP.
Felipe Paulino has made 2 appearances for the Rockies out of the pen so far. He has yet to surrender a run in those appearances which span 2 innings of work.
There have been a few transactions involving former G-Stros over the last few weeks. The following players were released out of spring training this year.
Robert Bono released by the Marlins.
Beau Torbert released by the Braves.
Polin Trinidad released by the Cubs.

What To Watch For In 2011 - Former G-Stros Outfield
Wrapping up our what to watch for series, we go to the expanse of the outfield. Here, we have several older players who are in other organizations now and a bunch of younger guys working their way to the top. Again the years they played in Greeneville, highest level and age on opening day will be in parenthesis.
Outfielders:
Jay Austin (2008 - High A - 20) - Austin was one of the youngest players both in the California League and in the Arizona Fall League. He showed the ability to adjust pretty well to the Cal. League but struggled in the AFL. He has seen alittle big league spring training action this year and even made the highlights once with his defense. Will he repeat high A or be moved on to AA? Can he use his speed to find more ways to reach base?
Brandon Barnes (2005,06 - AAA - 24) - Barnes keeps climbing the later as many of his peers fall to the side. In 2005, he played in the shadow of Eli Iorg & Josh Flores in Greeneville. Now, he is the only one left. Will his power hold up in the higher levels? Can he cut down on strikeouts? Will he be squeezed out playing time by the crush of OF in the system at the AA level?
Bryce Lane (2010 - High A - 21) Lane had a yo yo season last year. He started in Greeneville, was sent down to Gulf Coast League only to be promoted to High A Lancaster to finish the year. There, he found his groove and hit .356 in 15 games, with an OPS of over 1.000. Where will he start the season, Lex or Lancaster? Was his end of the year burst for real or just a flash in the pan?
J. D. Martinez (2009 - AA - 23) - Martinez's stock continues to rise. After skipping straight from low A to AA this year and continuing to hit over .300, he was invited to attend Major League Spring Training. He was slowed with a slight injury but was there primarily for the experience. At AAA, will he continue to show his solid average? Can his BB/SO rates hold up to more advance pitching? How will his power be after he suffered a bit of a power drop at AA? Will they experiment with him at first base any?
Telvin Nash (2010 - Rookie - 20) Nash was the 2010 MVP in Greeneville. He has raised some eyebrows in BP this spring with his power. That is by far the strongest (weak pun intended) part of this game. Can he improve his strike out rate? How much time does he have to improve his OF play before he is moved to 1B? How many HR will he his this year?
Others to watch:
Grant Hogue (2009 - Low A - 24) Can he make it to AA before the year is out? Will younger prospects block his movement?
Emilio King (2010- Rookie - 21) Will he repeat Greeneville or land higher? Can he bring his hitting up to the level of his defense? How will teams respect the arm of a guy who had 14 OF assist in just 148 chances?
Jordan Parraz (2004 - AAA - 26) Will he get a chance to play in a big league game this year? After being in 4 organizations in his career, how long will he be with the Yankees?
Beau Torbert (2004 - AAA - 27) Will he stick with the Braves organization or be released from spring training?
Will They Make It Out Of Spring Training?
Ryan Humphrey (2009 - Rookie - 22)
Wilton Infante (2008, 09 - SS A - 23)
Renzo Tello (2008 - Low A - 23)

Beau "Big Daddy" Torbert?
Apparently, former Greeneville Astro Beau Torbert has an Aunt Cindy. Apparently Aunt Cindy had some unclaimed cash that the South Carolina treasurer delivered to her house last month. When asked her plans, here is what Aunt Cindy had to say:
Put some in the bank, make a few home improvements, and with the rest, "I'm going to take it and buy an airline ticket to Florida to watch my nephew play ball."Family pride is a great thing. Yell for Beau for us at Appy Astros too!Her nephew from Georgia, her "baby" as she likes to say, is Beau "Big Daddy" Torbert, a 26-year-old outfielder signed by the in the off-season. Cindy says she'll spend a few days in Orlando, where Beau has spring training. "I'm gonna call his mother and say 'road trip time!'"

Signings, Free Agents, Another Beau Story & Milt Thompson Coming to G'ville?
Baseball America just released their list of the Minor League Free Agents. Here are the former Greeneville Astros on the list.
Houston Astros: Polin Trinidad (05-06), Jhon Florintino (05)
Baltimore Orioles: Jose Duran (07)
Philadelphia Phillies: Neil Sellers (04)
Washington Nationals: Jimmy Barthmaier (04), Victor Garate (05)
These players are free to sign with any other team. We have already heard some news that Garate has already been to a try out in Japan.
In other transactions released by Baseball America, the following former G-Stros were signed or re-signed by teams:
Atlanta Braves: Beau Torbert (04) (signed)
Houston Astros: Douglas Arguello(04)(re-signed)
Seattle Mariners: Raphie Henriquez (05-06)(re-signed)
Torbert's signing with the Braves got him some press in the big city Atlanta paper. Dave O'Brien's story has much of the same material others have had with the exception of this quote from the Braves' GM.
Milt Thompson who patrolled the outfield in Kingsport back in 1979 will return to the Appy this season as the Minor League Outfield/Base Running Coordinator for the Astros.

“He’s put up good numbers in the independent leagues,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “The numbers have improved each of the past three years. When you look at those kind of players that continue to improve and put up numbers, I think it’s worth taking a look.”

Beau on The Braves, Barnes Plays More & Winter Ball Stats
Beau Torbert was interviewed by the Columbus (Ga) Ledger Enquirer about his recent minor league free agent contract with the Braves.
He doesn't report any love loss for the Astros org who he says didn't give him a reason for his release. Beau is realistic about his chances to make the Mississippi Braves (AA) or Gwinnett Braves (AAA) rosters.
Houston Chronicle Baseball writer Zachary Levine confirms what many of us had suspected, Brandon Barnes is off the taxi squad and playing more because Jack Shuck has a bum knee. Brandon is hitting .267 with just one extra base hit in his first 8 games.
I was going to try to find a way to keep you up to date with winter ball stats of the Greeneville Astros Alums. MLB has made it simpler than I ever could have. They have a page devoted to each MLB team that list the stats for any players in their organization playing winter ball. Here is the Astros link. There are a few guys who are with other organizations like Santo Luis or those out of affiliated ball that I will give updates on from time to time.
“This is my last shot,” he said. “Because of my age and not wanting to really go back to indy league, I was thinking I would just move on. But this is one more, one last shot, and I’m going to do everything I can to take full advantage of it.”

“It’s always a numbers game,” Torbert said. “It’s hard once you’re an independent league guy. They’ve got their guys they drafted. It’s tough because you’re always on the back burner.”...“I feel like (with the Braves) I’m getting a legitimate shot,” he said. “The outfield is a spot they’re hurting. I’m just going to keep working hard and give this my full concentration and prove I can play.”

Beau Torbert Honored By Baseball America
Beau Torbert (Greeneville Astro 2004), won his second American Association MVP title this season. His near miss at hitting .400 for the season earned him the Baseball America's Independent League Player of the Year Honors.
In the article, Beau says he has relaxed more since he was released from the Astros organization in 2007.
His manager in Sioux Falls had this to say about Beau:
As for next seasons plans, as the article points out
In the article, Beau says he has relaxed more since he was released from the Astros organization in 2007.
"Before I was let go by Houston I put a lot of stress on myself to perform," Torbert said. "When I got to independent ball, I took a mindset that I'm in indy ball now, I can get back to basic baseball and having fun. Ever since I took that approach I try to not let too much good stuff or bad stuff go to my head."
His manager in Sioux Falls had this to say about Beau:
"The thing with Beau that has to be maddening for the opposition is that he'll hit anything," Shirley said. "He's a very difficult guy to pitch to.
"He understands his role is to drive in runs. He'll expand his strike zone because he knows he's up there to drive in a run. I know there are times in the other dugout where they had to wonder how he hit that, because we're wondering it. And he didn't just hit it but rocketed it off the scoreboard."
As for next seasons plans, as the article points out
After all, if .394-24-100 won't get him a contract with an affiliated team, it's hard to see what he can do to change scouts' minds next year.

What's He Up To: Beau Torbert
Wallace "Beau" Torbert was a member of the 2004 Greeneville Astros. He climbed all the way to AAA in the Astros' system before being released in 2007. He went to independent ball where he was then signed by the Tigers. He was released after spring training in 2008 and has been playing independent ball in the American Association ever since.
Beau is playing with the Sioux Fall Fighting Pheasants. He is dominating the league. As of today, he is leading the league in batting average (.390), hits (128), doubles (32), and RBI (87). He is second in slugging (.683) and HR (20). He has only made 2 errors in the field.
Last year, Beau was the MVP of the American Association.
Beau is 27 now. In baseball circles, that is considered your peak age. Here's hoping he gets picked up by an affiliated team soon and gets one more shot at the bigs.
On a side note, tied for fifth in the American Association for home runs is Beau's 04 teammate Ole Sheldon. Ole is playing for the St. Paul Saints.
If there any former Greeneville Astros you would like to know about, let me know and we will try to track them down.
